Current Voting Tally:

Council Votes Required To Pass: 3

Council Votes Received in Affirmative: 2

------------

I agree with several of the other members of the community that we should change the name of serf for various reasons.

I also agree that we with sam that we should change it to "Vassal"

Not that I disagree but isn't vassal a general term for the members of your realms that are under you? We should probably come up with another name for serf instead of using the general term "vassal".

Just a thought.

I liked vassal becuase it is a general term for someone that is under a liege or the council, this way they are just vassals without a noble title, if that makes since, making the only implied difference between say, a plain vassal and a count is that the count has earned a noble title. plus i believe using the general term will lead to using more local titles, i.e. mayor, baron, warlord, etc.

Interesting point... I guess I would just have to change the way I refer to my vassals then. Currently I even call Counts and Dukes my "vassals".

i usually just call the count or duke, unless im referring to them as a whole, in which case vassals would be appropriate, if you only want to reference counts and dukes you could say "Noble Vassals, or Landed Vassals" or something along those lines

Formalised Language Proposal:

Quote:
Effective immediately upon the passage of this bill, the landed rank known currently as "Serf" will now be known as "Vassal". All references to the term "Serf" in official documents will henceforth employ the term "Vassal".

I will not be voting in support of this change. I believe that vassal is too broad of a term to use, as we have used it for so long to refer to all of those who are beneath a liege. Also, in our world, serf has been the traditional name for the lowest rank for well over a year. I have yet to talk someone who is triggered by this word, which seems to be one of the largest arguments for changing it (that we may lose some applicants because they don't like the word, that is). I would much prefer to keep serf and stick with tradition.
