Yeah, there seems to me no need to limit the "travel" location to a single site. You could easily have two ports, and perhaps an overland road/rail line between them. Arrive at a city from one realm, then take a short overland journey to another port, then depart from there to your destination. Think of the new travel opportunities!

I don't think it makes sense to limit to only warping one other place. If so, you'd likely have a few closed loops that way. You should be able to warp to any other port on that body of water.

I think it's actually key that a boat only travels to one location. Otherwise, we will have people who only build one boat in their harbor and call it a day. Part of the reason I support this is because it will encourage harbor growth and boat building. If you only need to build one boat we will have places with small harbors and one boat that supposedly travels to every location in the empire. Realistically these boats would be coming and going all the time between their respective cities. Does it make sense for one boat to constantly be going to 10 different cities in 5 different realms?

I for one didn't expect there to only need to be one boat at any stage in the process

Also, only allowing the boat to travel to one location will require people to plan out their journey a bit more. For example, traveling from a port in Ertia to the Imperial City where there is a boat to Perth. A few extra steps, but makes it require a bit more to build up a truly awesome port.

Without mandating a single travel location per boat we will end up with tiny ports, not the glorious ones we hope this will inspire. The harbors with boats to many different cities will be truly incredible because it will take a while to build up that kind of infrastructure. Those who build them will be rewarded with high traffick, as people hoping to travel to a realm they don't have a boat to will need to pass through that city first.

We don't want a cop out. The nether took an insane amount of time to build up to what we have today, efficient and safe travel. Boat fast travel shouldn't be something that happens overnight. It should take time, which is more in the vanill spirit.

It must be readily apparent that this is a busy, international port, truly deserving of a connection - we would want to see many ships, not just a single vessel serving as the connection.

Right, the idea was never to create a quantum boat. In your scenario Arjen, there would be a different vessel for each travel link. A Perthian boat that caters the link between the port and Perth, a Valtoran boat that caters the link between the port and Valtoros, etc.

Included in my proposed guidelines are the twin ideas that a) each travel link requires a separate pairing of vessels and b) any harbor wishing to be a viable harbour to house a travel link must prove itself to be a truly international, developed harbor - multiple ships and signs of deep investment in building the area up are requirements, not just optional

I think we're on the same page.

Yes Nick, I think we're on the same page too. One boat pair required for the journey between Ertia and Valtoros, one required for the journey between Ertia and Wysteria, etc. I was more replying to Mark who, as I understand, would have one boat be given the ability to travel anywhere it wishes

I still don't get where you thought we'd let people get away with tiny ports, even if the port only went to one location. My understanding was you had to put in serious effort, meaning many boats and good quality boats at that.

Right, so I get that you're in favor of having really awesomely large ports required for international wrap travel. If we vote on whether or not a port is viable for travel, and then simply allow a boat in that port to travel to any other port connection, there will be no objectivity or standards in deciding what makes a harbor viable for international travel. Only allowing a boat to warp to one other port connection is an objective way in which we can regulate the size of a port without needing to vote on whether or not it is subjectively large enough to have a boat that travels everywhere. This also allows for smaller, more local ports if desired. Only want to connect to your closest neighbor? Build one boat and travel to his port city. Want to connect to 10 different ports? You'll spend some time building up a huge port, but it would be worth it.

No one proposed that, and no one in mumble has thought that's how it would be. That's the point of the thread, eh?

"Only want to connect to your closest neighbor? Build one boat and travel to his port city."

This is a bit silly, IMHO. You shouldn't be able to just build one boat and have such an OP warping capability. I think one would need several boats, international boats built in cooperation with others, port infrastructure, and basically a proper county.
