Some people are speculating that the wings will be found on End ships, since they don't have any notable loot yet. It would be pretty sweet/useful to fly around the end.

Just tested them out. They are pretty cool but in order to use them you have to be falling. Jumping off a mountain would start them up. Entities (such as throwable potions, arrows) go behind you so you have to have some type of strategy when doing organized attacks (airstrike time).

If we were to kick 1.9 off with another lore war it'd be full of ass kickery

I tried them out to and they are pretty badass. It is a looooot of fun to fly around the Nether. At this point in time, it sounds like they are going to be pretty rare and pretty hard to get. We should probably discuss as a community how we want to handle distribution of the Elytra should the rarity remain unchanged (as it appears it will be).
