Ok, I have some more time on my hands and have remembered to give my thoughts in full.
First off, I would say we've done pretty well by this foray into advertising! As of the moment, we have 5 new applications, all of which are showing promise! Taking into account our present population, this represents a pretty fair proportion of newcomers.
So what have we learned for next time?
- r/minecraft remains a fantastic venue for advertising, and is still safe for us; the post was well on its way to getting to the top before the mods called us out on some rather-too-pointed comments. Next time, we'll need to make sure any replies we make in the comments are purely about our lore and history; make it as descriptive as possible to allow everyone to see lots of information. Where we (read: I and, according to the mods, Gimpy) went wrong was to write comments that crossed the line from "check out our cool builds that we built on this server" to "we'd love you to apply to this server!". In the future, we'll make sure to censor the word 'apply' from our public comments and pm anyone who seems interested; that worked well here.
- r/mcservers was disappointingly barren of any interested redditors; our posts garnered exactly zero comments from anyone who was not already a Hermertian. I expected a bit more of a response, particularly as regent's last post there attracted lots of interest.
- This time around, we used only reddit; I'm still looking at other options. I've literally never used voat and have no idea of its scope or potential, and planetminecraft both asks for our ip and drowns servers out in a list of probably hundreds. Thoughts on these or other potential venues for future advertisements?
As always, I welcome any thoughts on this!
