You are officially in! Now the Liege offers can start. As you say you wish to become a travelling contractor/builder etc. I spent a lot of my time when I first arrived 2 years ago touring and going to visit other people's lands and helping them build stuff, while also building a settlement in King Scrio's lands. It seemed to be that I'd build one thing in Perth, then go abroad and do a co-build, then come back to Perth again, so your play style is certainly possible.
