How it works in-game: gunpowder is loot dropped by creepers and ghasts. It is used to create TNT, fire charges, fireworks, and splash potions. Dispensers can fire various projectiles (potions, arrows, fire charges, etc.) and TNT cannons can hurl TNT great distances.

How it has been used in lore up until now:
gunpowder has not been mentioned much in lore outside of its association with creepers and its use in explosives. Explosives have been famously mentioned in lore terror incidents like the attempted assassination of Mark Accynafon and the bombings during the Unraveling.

Proposals:
Cerydon’s thoughts:
Gunpowder is an explosive powder commonly referred to as blast powder (since guns do not exist). It is similar to real world gunpowder, but is less potent, thus preventing its use for firearms, cannons, and large rockets. It is commonly used to create primitive (by real world historical standards) explosives and fireworks. Small explosives with fuses are attached to splash potions to cause the “splash” effect. TNT cannons in game would be substituted in lore for siege weapons like catapults, trebuchets, and so on. Dispensers would be equated to scorpions/ballistas in lore; both fire projectiles and dispensers even require a bow to make them.

These are just some initial ideas. Share your thoughts below.

Dispensers obviously have some effect on this. If we consider what fire charges, fireworks, and arrows do without dispensers, then consider what they do with them, we can possibly come to some kind of group conclusion for what the dispenser turns these items into, or perhaps collectivley they turn into - and if they indeed makes something like a dispenser+fire charge or dispenser + fireworks into a "cannon" of sorts.

This makes me think that hermertians haven't developed something similar to chemistry, specifically a table of primary elements that compose the world (I dont know if any religion has something like this).

Regarding the "blast powder" I think many would say its some kind of chaotic essence since its dropped from creepers. This wouldn't be the exact origin of gun powder, but a theorized origin from scholars (mainly those influenced by crepeerisn) Similar to how in ancient times people try to determine the origin of things (like water or air) hermertians could say "blast powder" is the chaos of the universe materialized. This could be an interesting way to develop a hermertian pseudo-science (much like IRL alchemy or astrology)that tries to determine the primary elements of the world (AKA hermertian proto-chemistry)

There have been "cannons" on ships made for a while now, will they be reclassified as arrow launchers or smaller ballistae? Not sure how explosions can exist within tnt or other things but there's insufficient power from the powder for a small cannonball. That's a slight inconsistency that would have to be thought out.
Although we've not necessarily ever talked about cannons or their use/lore before so I have no idea where to start.

Yes, since dispensers are similar to ballistas/scorpions in both the projectiles they fire and their composition. Assuming we go the no cannons route, of course.

I don't think that TNT cannons should be excepted from lore because they are a long established device that can be built within Minecraft's mechanics and they have been built before on this server. However, their large size and unwieldiness prevent them from being placed on ships.

Smaller cannons and guns may not exist because our gunpowder is not very potent and due to the physics of the explosion: the explosive energy released by gunpowder increases quickly as the volume does, but falls off because the gunpowder absorbs some of the energy of the chain reaction, meaning that adding more gunpowder after a certain volume produces diminishing returns. As a result, there is an ideal amount of gunpowder to maximize explosive yield equal to about one block (when mixed with sand), far too big for small cannons or guns to be viable as weapons. Scorpion projectiles and rockets are used instead.

Excellent point there Chairman. We should direct more people here when playing to get their input as well on the matter. Good discussion so far.

Getting this discussion rolling again. What do people think of the following proposal:

Gunpowder in the empire is not developed enough for firearms like muskets or large cannons, but is used to create basic explosives and small rockets. Some very rudimentary gunpowder weapons do exist, but they are either very dangerous/temperamental or inaccurate/ineffective. Ship-mounted weapons are ballistas or other non-gunpowder weapons.

sounds about right to keep things from getting too advanced and industrialised/obsolete. I like it barring further developements which i may like more.
