The meeting started 10 minutes prior before Grand Admiral Liam Raymond entered the room. He staggered to the end of the table and sat down heavily into his seat. Worried whispered circulated the room; he looked very sick. His cheeks were concave and his eyes hollow, staring at nothing. His hair brittle and rusted, straw like. His clothes looked two sizes too large, they hung over him like a curtain. “What is the latest news?” He managed to stammer, though his voice faltered at several places. Perhaps the Grand Admiral was too sick to lead? What would happen if he died? Arthur was only 14, would he be able to rule the realm? Tehlmar broke the uneasy silence that followed the Grand Admirals question. “The militiamen have been trained, they showed pure bravery as they fought off bandits that had been daring enough to raid Testipolis.” This was met by some cheers and a weak smile swept across the Grand Admirals face before vanishing again. He was still staring into nothingness.

“That is excellent news Master Tehlmar. Is there any other news to be heard?” His voice was stronger this time, though it was still noticeably weak. The Councilmen sat at the table staring, shaking their heads, before Steward Walther spoke up. “Arthur is excelling at his studies my liege, he is out pacing even me at stewardship. I think he will be more than capable of tak-“ he stopped suddenly, realising what it was that he was saying. Even Walther, perhaps the Grand Admirals closest friend, knew that he might not last till winter. The Grand Admirals face was littered with emotion, he knew what his colleagues were thinking. He bowed his head so no one could see the tears welling in his eyes. “Would he be able to rule without a regent?” He asked, confirming that he too knew that his demise was likely. Several of the councilmen shifted in their seats and Callum looked visibly sickened by what his friend and mentor had said. Walther nodded his head grimly, and said “he would be able to handle it though perhaps some powers should be taken from the position and granted to The Ten?” Tehlmar shot him a poisonous look, he knew that Walther was ambitious but surely he wouldn’t do that to the Grand Admiral?

After a very long pause the Grand Admiral finally spoke, it was but a whisper but it carried through the stiff air of the meeting hall. “Very well,” he had to pause due to coughing, “from henceforth the Council of The Ten now has the power to command others, this Council is no longer an advisory body but instead a legalised government.” Walther smiled, Callum bowed his head, Tehlmar went pale – paler than normal for an elf at least. “Now leave,” the Grand Admiral whispered. When no one shouted he used what must have been the last of his strength to bellow the command once again, with it echoing off the walls. Every one left at that moment and he was sat in his chair with his now oversized clothes draping over him.

It saddens me to hear of Raymond's fleeting health. He has been a fine citizen of the empire.

It is always hard for a nation to watch its leader grow old, and even harder for a son to watch his father do so. My best wishes to Raymond, his son, and the people of Erikos in these days.
