Post subject:  Hermertia Scale FAQ

Hey all, this is a formalization of the discussion we had a couple weeks ago about the scale of Hermertia (OP here). The figures here will provide guidelines regarding the size and population of Hermertia when writing lore. I’ll put it in FAQ form to make it easy to find the information you are looking for when writing lore.

How big is Hermertia?
In terms of lore, our world is scaled up by a factor of 15 from our Minecraft world. This means that our 65km x 85km Minecraft world is approximately 1000km x 1300km. As a reference, here is the size of our world compared to western Europe:

How large is Hermertia’s population?

The total population of the Empire is estimated to be in the area of 2-5 million people, pending a formal census to determine a more exact figure.

How large are my settlements, towns, cities, etc.?
The population of settlements is in large part determined by their size in game, but there is always room for some adjustment based on lore. The ranges provided are just approximations, and are not necessarily set in stone. That said, here is a guide for estimating the size of your settlements:

Metropolis = 100,000+
These are the ‘super’ cities of the world that dwarf most other settlements. Concordia is a prime example of this type of settlement. In order to meet this classification, a city should be composed of a great many large buildings, with 30-40 total buildings at a minimum.

City = 40,000 – 60,000
Though smaller than a metropolis, these settlements are much larger than towns. Examples of this type of settlement are Secara and Northtown. Most capitals will fall into this category. Generally speaking, a city will be composed of 20-30 buildings.

Town = 10,000 - 15,000
Towns make up the bulk of Hermertia’s settlements. An example of this type of settlement is Miradost. Towns generally have between 10 and 20 buildings.

Village = 1,000 – 5,000
These are the smallest kinds of settlements. An example is Voltau. These settlements are generally only composed of a few buildings.

Just out of curiosity, was there a medieval name for metropolis?

Not that I could think of, but if someone else can come up with a better name I'll gladly change it.

Given the confusion regarding determining population of larger settlements, it seems the ranges (both population and buildings) still need some work. Here is a proposal for adjustments to the numbers and language of the rnages:

Metropolis: 80,000+
Buildings: 30-60 (depending on building size)

City: 25,000-80,000
Buildings: 20-50 (depending on building size)

Town: 5,000-25,000
Buildings: 10-30 (depending on building size)

Village: 0-5,000
Less than 10 buildings

This proposal will provide clearer and more all-encompassing ranges that would hopefully reduce confusion. Let me know what you all think, and if you have any suggestions.

I think the distance scale is a bit weird here:

Are we sure our empire wouldn't be larger than that? I guess I always thought of it as being more like the size of Europe + northern Africa + middle east, or something like that.

I agree with the size increase.

I agree that a size change makes sense, but I think Europe + MENA is a bit too big. I'm thinking something like just Europe. Could someone make a mockup or two of the various sizes so we can better assess our options?
