This is an excerpt from an Östrade Economic Guild Meeting Report on the status of Östlæd's economy Östlæd's decision to secede from the Mercurian Empire proved to the the final crack in the foundation of the realm's former economic might. Despite the signing of Treaties of Understanding, tightening economic relations with several nations, those nations by and large did not feel obliged to honor the agreement, especially with the collapse of the Östfleot in late 545 A.I. With few nations purchasing grain, ale, and heavy materials from the realm, combined with an enormous demand for materials to fund a massively over-sized military, and finally a shortage of labor caused by large numbers of mostly men (and some women) dedicated to militia efforts, economic collapse was inevitable. Mark Accynnafon II's plans to quickly subdue Östlond and defeat the Imperial forces did not come to pass - had they, it is possible the realm would still be fine economically. In late 545 and early 546, Östlond seized the majority of Östlæd's foreign assets, including the majority of Östrade assets and funds abroad. Many merchant vessels - full of supplies Östrade was bringing back to Östlæd to supply the war effort ( like ale, food, metals, weapons) - were seized as well. The revolt of Grestanhlith, a more secular and trade dependent village in Acholm Farthing, seems inevitable. The Winter of 545-546 was the harshest on Östron records. Ice formed in the Groenesee, and many Östlond troops traveled over the sea to liberate Östlond friendly places like the mining hamlets of Carrwic and Furenspring. The combined factors of revolt and economic collapse seemed to lead to the inevitable end of Östlæd. |
