Residents of Mt. Empire awoke to the sound of beating drums on the morning of Eostre 1, Year of the Emperor 544. The gates to the Östron quarter were open after days of them shut and locked. The sound of drums, and slowly, horns echoed through the valleys of the town. People from all sections and quarters, from Pyrencians to Wysterians, and Ertians to Laghimans came out into the streets to discuss the noise. After some time, the noise stopped. Out from the gates poured some thousands of Östrons, accompanied by several hundred Östron soldiers. Slowly, they marched with handcarts, mules, horses, and other animals to the Northern and Imperial docks. A few dozen large cogs and a few dozen carracks soon docked. The Östrons boarded the vessels with amazing efficiency. Once the last Östron ceorl had boarded the last carrack, the master of the monastery blew a loud horn. He opened his arms and proclaimed to those gathered nearby: “The Mercurian Empire is no longer safe. We must go now.” With those words, the fleet left the harbor, and headed north to the safe waters off the eastern side of the Imperial Isle. |
