The Thanesmoot of 543

“As the Divine authority of the Östron realm of Östlaed, I, Ealdorman Mark Accynnafon, Second of His Name, call this Thanesmoot of 543 to order.”

Tension had settled slightly from the time of the “Judgement of Wiccaweald.” Official words of protest had been sent by several Thanes, anonymously to the Östur. One was even stuck on the outer hall door with an Östron dagger. The Ealdorman had sent several public messages to every village, hamlet, and settlement declaring Döm X will be upheld - and of course, signed with his now infamous “Unite or Die” mantra.

The people were still afraid, of course. They thought that despite the disappearance of their shrines and temples to traditional Östron objects of devotion - they would survive. They figured they’d still prosper, as long as their vibrant trade with other realms remained intact. Many simply hid entire shrines deep in the forests and mountains anyways, away from known roads and larger hamlets. Only the most devoted made pilgrimages to these sites, for only the most devoted were allowed to know.

Gröteorl Cerdic Accynnafon entered the Östturhealle right after the Ealdorman called the meeting to order. He was wearing his full set of Knight’s armor - well, not his old, Order of Sanct Creopbaina set. A new set, one with words written in the Suthron dialect. He took his seat at the Ealdorman’s right, as he always had.

The Ealdorman was quickly brought to anger, and yelled at Cerdic “What are you doing here, in the suit of a Knight?!! You are no longer a Knight. Remove your armor this instance!”

Cerdic responded, saying “Fuck that. As a noble of the realm, I am entitled to raise my own troops as I see fit - recall the powers our father bestowed upon us when we received the noble titles? I retain that right, despite your reorganization of the military. I have re-established the Ostronweard in my lands, as the formally organized militia. You left us with so few soldiers or knights to protect ourselves, in your religious idiocy.”

The Ealdorman was stunned. This was a huge threat to his power.

“This will be dealt with. For now, keep your “militia” to your shires. If they cross into Frithengestshire or Acholmshire, they will be attacked, as it will be understood to be an un-holy and aggressive invasion.”

“You divide us further every day, brother” said Cerdic, almost solemnly.

“Let us proceed with actual business, great Thanesmoot” growling, as he did lately, “Firstly, I wish to offer compensation for the acts of the Halig Frecan under my orders in areas that have not devoted themselves to the Creopbaina. Halig Frecan of their local area will help in rebuilding, revitalizing, and other efforts to improve their local area. Also, some areas will receive financial compensation to affected families.”

Several Thanes seemed quite surprised, even pleased. It was something at least.

“Secondly, “ Mark cleared his throat, “Many rulers of foreign realms will be arriving within the next few weeks. They will be hosted here, in the Östur. I will be seeking to sign individual peace treaties with these nations, in addition to dedicated trade treaties. This will be necessary to protect our interests, considering how ineffective the Council of the Crowned and even the House of Dukes have been for some years in governing Imperial matters. Half of the Council and the House have not even voted on Imperial bills for years! This Empire, despite its growth and acceptance of new realms have not managed affairs and it harms our trade and security. We must take matters into our own hands to ensure relations with other nations.”

Most Thanes were puzzled by this. Cerdic knew better. He thought to himself “Ah yes, fearmongering.”

“Thirdly, I will be revoking and adding rights of Foreign nations granted in Döm V pending their acceptance of individual peace and trade treaties. Nations that fail to sign a treaty will see their citizens stripped of the right to own property in Acholm. Their commercial property will be transferred to Östrade. Those that do sign it will see their rights to own property, including resupplying of military vessels in Acholm, Gourdham, Merscafen, Lam Zanor, and Northubeorc, increase. ”

Cerdic and many others in the room were quite puzzled by this move. If the fundamentalists hate other culture/nations so much, why allow them more rights if they sign these unnecessary treaties?

“Finally, I am restoring the Council of the Order, which will now include the Masters and senior brothers of the following monasteries: Acholm, Haligstrom, Northubeorc, and Mt. Empire. Arnum monastery was not interested in participating, and as such appears to now be an independent monastery of a different order entirely. We will no longer be sending monks to their service, nor will we receive monks from Arnum.” the Ealdorman was quite soft in saying this. It pained him to see the Arnum monastery so disconnected, but with their Fundamentalist master long since passed away, normal Östron mythology had taken deep root there. Monospiritualism did not appeal to the Östrons of Arnum.

“This Council of the Order will take over command of the Halig Frecan, and re-establish an armed merchant fleet as during the days of old. Their initial ships will come from a seizure of 5% of ships owned by all trading guilds owned by Östrons. Not all is bad in this deal - these ships will continue to function as needed, as traders. However, Halig Frecan sailors will man their important positions and armed fleets will become the norm, with the exception of small trade conducted inter-realm.”

Many Thanes stood up, beating their chests and threatening the Ealdorman. This was too far. What was the point of this even? It was just another power grab that would only harm traders ability to conduct trade. This had been the way in the past, but now, many traders armed their own ships and sometimes never even traded in Östron goods - they traded between other realms of the Mercurian Empire. The Thanes knew this was the resumption of the original attempt in the 400s to conduct all trade through the Order and their merchant fleet.

The Haligcnihten filed into the room, equipped with large maces. The Ealdorman proclaimed with a huge voice, his arms outstretched “The Order of Sanct Creopbaina rules this realm. My final act today is to revoke the right of the Thanes to vote in this Thanesmoot - instead, I will simply announce rulings of the Council of the Order to you, as a courtesy. I know some of you Thanes will have an issue with this, and as such, you will be escorted from the building.”

Such was the last Thanesmoot of the Östron realm of Östlaed.
