How it works in game: diamonds are used to create high quality tools and armor. They are also used to create enchanting tables and jukeboxes. This is not the best match for how diamonds work in the real world, but it is still possible to merge the two somehow.

How it has been used in lore up until now: while diamond tools and armor have been mentioned in lore, there has been little if any mention of the exact details of those items. This gives us a lot of wiggle room to mesh new lore with current lore.

Proposals:
1. Diamonds work similarly to the real world:
Diamonds are used to improve tools and armor by improving the cutting edge for swords, axes, and shovels and improve the durability of armor after being forged into it (i.e. diamonds embedded in plate armor). Diamonds are merely used as an accent for enchanting tables and are not a necessary component from a lore perspective. Diamonds are used for the tip of the needle in jukeboxes.

2. Diamonds work entirely differently than they do in the real world:
Diamonds do not share many of their real world traits. Diamonds are a gem that can be crushed into a fine powder and infused into metallurgical processes to increase the durability of said forged items. Diamonds are merely used as an accent for enchanting tables and are not a necessary component from a lore perspective. Powderized diamonds are used to forge the fine tip of the needle used in jukeboxes.

These are just some initial ideas. Share your thoughts below.

I personally like something along #2 - that perhaps what we call diamonds are actually something else entirely (more like mithril? idk) or indeed have vastly different properties.

An interesting discussion. Could be multiple types of gem stones or precious metal that are dug up ? Diamonds could be a part of it all.

I like the idea that the singular item diamond could in fact refer to multiple different materials, such as Mithril, Sapphire, Ruby, etc. This gives us a lot more flexibility in our lore.

I agree with the idea of it being separate items, and that diamond is just the group label. For example, the diamonds we use for our tools and armour could be mithril, the diamonds we use for enchanting could be some magical stone such as Aetherium or something like that, gives much more flexibility like Septimus said.

I like the association of diamonds and mithril. Diamonds in-game could be the equivalent of a chunk of mithril ore in lore. I do worry about making diamonds the overall label for multiple different minerals, as this could easily get confusing.

It would be far more fantastical to have diamonds for all master crafted tools and items, iron isn't the only ore in the world either. Of course we could have specific special ores for things, represented by diamond or whatever type of armour.

I like the idea of diamonds representing various top tier ores.

We could also consider diamond to be a strong metal (like mithril or titanium) in it of itself. It could be especially tough, flexible, and light compared to iron, while also having important enchantment conducting properties. This would explain their use in a broad variety of contexts, from jukeboxes to tools to armor. Different cultures could also refer to diamond by different names, such as mithril.

It seems that most participants are in favor of saying that diamond tools and armor in-game are forged out of mithril in lore (diamonds in-game then being the equivalent of a chunk of mithril ore). Is there anyone opposed to the lore-ification of diamonds in this manner?
