Post subject:  Re: Languages of the Mercurian Empire

Language Name:
Östron and/or Östronish

Realms Spoken In:
Östlaed, Imperial Holdings, Casadia, Perth, G.R.R.H., Laghima

Ethnicities/Races/Species/Sub-Species Spoken By:
Östron, known to some Dwarvish tribes

Parent Language (Old Elvish, Old Dwarvish, Mercurian, etc.):
Proto-Östron, which came from Mittelheimian, with some Old Dwarvish and Proto-Gaeilgen influences.

Dialects:
N/A
Accents:
Gelderlondish
Imperial Östron

Details:

Östron is a language that formed as a result from Millelhiemian and other Uthmod speaking peoples intermingling with a minority of Gaeilgen speaking humans that came into close contact with the Dwarvish tribes. Vocabulary was largely replaced. Word order as well was altered significantly.

Östron, however, is not understood by Dwarves that do not take the time to study it as any other language. The same goes for those that speak Gaeilgen - too much is different from either direction. Those from Mittelheim would understand it to some degree.

Language Name:
Talvilainen

Realms Spoken In:
Dawnstar, Perth. Dôreryn.

Ethnicities/Races/Species/Sub-Species Spoken By:
Dawnstar native Aethen, Dôreryn Aethen.

Parent Language (Old Elvish, Old Dwarvish, Mercurian, etc.):

Ibarahian, the Language of the Elves.

Dialects:

Talvilainen is itself a strong dialect of Ibarahian, the Elven Language

Accents:

Broadly different across each tribe. Each native tribe is a nomadic entity. There is little communication between them and the accents are kept almost entierly intact.

Dôreryn Aethen speak this language, predictably, with a strong accent of their own.

Details:

From what can be gleaned from the precious few instances where a Dawnstar native has actually spoken without resorting to violence, there is a significant amount of vowels and a lack of a number of sounds or letters found in Mercurian.

Post subject:  Re: Languages of the Mercurian Empire

Language Name:
Casadian

Realms Spoken In:
Casadia

Ethnicities/Races/Species/Sub-Species Spoken By:
Casadians

Parent Language (Old Elvish, Old Dwarvish, Mercurian, etc.):
Ishtek (language of the desert tribes in the original homeland of the Casadians)

Dialects:
None

Accents:
There are slight pronunciation differences between Old World Casadian and New World Casadian. The New World Casadian has a more cosmopolitan phonetic flavoring due to greater interaction with other realms than their Old World counterparts.

Details:
Casadian began to branch off from its parent language (Ishtek) after the Casadians left their ancestral desert home. Pronunciation and vocabulary changed somewhat as they interacted with new peoples outside of the desert. Notable language changes ended after The Fall, after which Casadians lived in near isolation for two hundred years. The language has begun to slowly evolve again following Casadian settlement in the Mercurian Empire.

Language Name:

Karsiti

Realms Spoken In:

Laghima

Ethnicities/Races/Species/Sub-Species Spoken By:

Karsites

Parent Language (Old Elvish, Old Dwarvish, Mercurian, etc.):

Mercurian

Dialects:

None

Accents:

Accents variation among Karsite Tribes used to be great but following large population decline among Karsites, it dwindled down and hardly exists.

Details:

Karsiti developed as a response to Mercurian traders and merchants interacting with the Karsites. The language is widely spoken in Laghima by over 800+ ethnic Karsites and remains alive. Though many other Mercurians do not understand the language, many speakers of Karsiti do understand Mercurian languages a little more easier than most.

Language Name:
Pyrencian

Realms Spoken In:
Pyrencia, Kaine

Ethnicities/Races/Species/Sub-Species Spoken By:
Pyrencians

Parent Language (Old Elvish, Old Dwarvish, Mercurian, etc.):
Presumed to descend from an isolated branch of an ancient elven dialect, due to the reclusive nature of Pyrencians before the Burning of the Isle of Shadows, and also due to their extremly short generations, it has evolved a large amount and bears little resemblance to any known languages

Dialects:
The pyrencian population in kaine speak a slightly different version of the language

Accents:
Every region/settlement in Pyrencia have slightly different accents, the further north and east speak with rougher tones, where the further south or west you go in pyrencia, the lighter and smoother the tone becomes

Details:
Pyrencians as a nation are generally bilingual, speaking both Mercurian and Pyrencian with equal measure

Post subject:  Re: Languages of the Mercurian Empire

Language Name:
Hruntyng

Realms Spoken In:
Thrunur and in small enclaves in the Kingdom of Minerva.

Ethnicities/Races/Species/Sub-Species Spoken By:
Hrynjandi

Parent Language (Old Elvish, Old Dwarvish, Mercurian, etc.):
The Þingr language is an almost extinct tongue that once dominated the Þingr Kingdom. Hruntyng evolved from ancient Þingr in the eras after the migration to Thrunur (often referred to as Hrynjandi).

Dialects:
None.

Accents:
The Alendi tribe in the northern reaches of the Apocryphaen Wastes speak with a distinct variant in pronunciation. Often described as talking with a bundle of wheat in their throats, the Alendi are noticeably more soft spoken than their southern brethren.

Lesser variations of Hruntyng exist in the New World but thanks to a strong cultural heritage the "original" pronunciation has been mostly preserved.

Details:
Modern Hruntyng bears little resemblance to the language spoken by the ancient Þingr. Centuries of linguistic drift have rendered most ancient texts unreadable by the average Hrynjandi.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Language Name:
Tavke

Realms Spoken In:
Various realms.

Ethnicities/Races/Species/Sub-Species Spoken By:
Spoken by members of the Dakdakrok.

Parent Language (Old Elvish, Old Dwarvish, Mercurian, etc.):
Unknown. Possibly a corruption or variant of ancient Þingr.

Dialects:
None.

Accents:
Various accents within the lower castes of the Dakdakrok exist as very few grow up with Tavke as their mother tongue. Before being recognized as true Disciples, initiates must attain a certain level of pronunciation as is standardized by the Dakdakrok.

Details:
While its origins are unclear, Tavke plays an important ritualistic and practical purpose within the Dakdakrok organization. In the majority of circumstances members of the Dakdakrok resort to speaking Tavke in matters relating to the organization. This helps maintain a level of secrecy as learning material outside of the group is almost nonexistant.

As a rule, the Dakdakrok always refer to their superiors with their titles in Tavke but not Mercurian or other languages.

Post subject:  Re: Languages of the Mercurian Empire

Language Name:
"Gathered Garble", "Garble", "Gatheredese", etc.

Realms Spoken In:
The GRHH, Northern Casadia, Concordia, small pockets throughout the Empire.

Ethnicities/Races/Species/Sub-Species Spoken By:
The Gathered.

Parent Language (Old Elvish, Old Dwarvish, Mercurian, etc.):
If a language is spoken in the Empire, it is probably spoken amongst the Gathered. If it is spoken amongst the Gathered, it has been incorporated into their "Garble".

Dialects:
Diction and pronunciation is dependent on the culture of the speaker and what language(s) they are most comfortable speaking. Occasional use of sheep bleats by some communities.

Accents:
Too many. Often mutually incomprehensible.

Details:
Not so much its own language as it is a pastiche of many languages from around the Empire, "Gathardese" is a direct result of the centuries of multicultural influence on the Gathered. Though it may borrow words and grammatical structures from different languages, it is inscrutable to most outsiders who speak those languages due to shifts (and that's putting it nicely) in pronunciation.

I need more information!

So far I'm missing languages for:

* Kaine
* Reinen
* Minerva, Valtoros, Perth
* Khabranth
* Isilioth
* Ertia
* Wysteria

If you at least know anything about those languages, give me info! I really just need information to make a basic language tree, so source languages are great!

Post subject:  Re: Languages of the Mercurian Empire

Language Name:
Ertian

Realms Spoken In:
Ertia, New Ertia (old Hermertia), certain portions of Wysteria, and certain portions of Dor Eryn (close to Ertian border)

Ethnicities/Races/Species/Sub-Species Spoken By:
Ertian, Wysterian, and educated Dor Eryn Aethen

Parent Language (Old Elvish, Old Dwarvish, Mercurian, etc.):
Ertian is an original language hailing from the great old, northern Ertian empire before its collapse.

Dialects:
Proto-Ertian - Proto-Ertian is the evolution of the Ertian language that has developed as a result of living in the Mercurian Empire for as long as the Ertians have. It is a combination of the common tongue and Ertian.

Accents:
Those who speak Ertian/Proto-Ertian that hail from large cities such as Florae or Amora typically have less of an accent than those who live in the far reaches of the Kingdom. Typically it is easy for those with different accents to understand one another. However, those who have been born in large cities in New Hermertia might struggle to understand anyone who has spent their entire life in a much older city in Old Hermertia, such as New Schapstad or Arjenton.

Details:
Ertian is the language that has been spoken by the Ertian people since the days in which they lived in their great northern Empire. After its collapse, scholars preserved the language and those who journeyed south towards the Mercurian Empire continued to speak it. After being accepted into the Empire, a modernized form of Ertian, Proto-Ertian, began to develop. It is a combination of the common tongue, Proto-Mercurian, and Ertian. Proto-Ertian is typically spoken in cities where there is a great deal of contact with outsiders, such as Florae, Amora, and Three Rivers. Those who live in small villages and towns spread out across the Kingdom speak a more traditional Ertian. The language is also spoken in parts of Wysteria, as they originally hailed from the Kingdom. Ambitious folk from Dor Eryn also have learned to speak the tongue, as some of them live alongside Ertians in the co-city of Amora.
