Casadian explorers report that they have found an isolated dwarven monastery deep in the jungles of Ygros. Their unfamiliar language has created barriers to communication, but our explorers managed to learn a few details about their society. They call themselves the Mittilari and worship a strange magical crystal they call the Tarmoq:

Our explorers also drew a few sketches of the monastery. The hidden entrance to the monastery:

What a strange and wonderful discovery. Are there any clues to how long they've been there?

It seems they have been living there for quite some time. Our translators are working on learning more about them.

Discoveries like this tell us how little we have explored these lands, Casadian exploration is achieving more and more.

After embedding themselves among the Mittilari, a pair of Casadian scholars have begun to gain an understanding of the language and culture of Mittilari. Their language appears to have its roots in the ancient dwarven tongue, though centuries of isolation has led to the development of a distinct dialect. The Mittilari share their dwarven brethren's skill in stonecraft, but they are less than capable when it comes to metallurgy and smithing. It is theorized that the humid environment of the jungle has discouraged them from the extensive use of metal tools due to the increased threat of rusting. In limited trading, the Mittilari have been awed by Casadian tools and weapons and have been eager to trade knowledge for such items.

Though the Mittilari have been willing traders of knowledge, they have retained their secrets. Little new information has been gleaned about the Tarmoq. None save the priests are allowed inside the holy chamber in which it resides. Our scholars have heard in passing conversation that the Mittilari believe the crystal projects a ward of protection around the settlement, but the priests have been unwilling to confirm any information about the Tarmoq. There is also little knowledge gained about other Mittilari settlements. It has been hinted in conversation that there are others, but they are reluctant to share any information about them.

Our scholars will continue to study the Mittilari, and will report further discoveries as they occur.

These are fascinating discoveries. The happenings from around the empire are always first to be read on my desk.

After nearly three decades of study, Casadian scholars have significantly more to report regarding the mysterious Mittilari dwarves of the jungles of Ygros. The full extent of their research is currently being compiled, but notable items are listed below.

The settlement is governed by a tribunal known as a kazarn. Each member of the kazarn is elected by the denizens of the settlement and maintain their position for life. The tribunal serves as a judicial and executive body operating by majority rule in both cases. Constraints on the power of the kazarn are few and far between and relate almost entirely to religious aspects handled by priests.

Discussions with priests have revealed some insights about the history of the Mittilari. There are no written historical records save for epitaphs carved onto tombs. The stories told by these epitaphs combined with the oral history shared by the priests tell the tale of a great catastrophe that seems to align chronologically with The Fleeing. Prior to this cataclysm, the Mittilari lived in great cities to the south of the jungle. The Mittilari fled into the jungle to escape from what the epitaphs describe as a ‘great darkness’ that consumed their civilization. The exact nature of this ‘darkness’ is lost to time, as no records from that time remain besides vague legends. Their mistrust of strangers is partially rooted in a belief that they will bring the ‘great darkness’ with them.

The Mittilari are skilled apothecaries and healers. The Mittlari are loath to part with their medicinal recipes, though gifts of fine tools and weapons have resulted in limited sharing of this knowledge. They have extensive knowledge of the various plants of the jungle and their uses in potions and medicines. Two notable concoctions are a healing poultice said to cure rot and a potent poison used on the tips of their arrows. The latter is so dangerous that Mittilari children are required to ingest small amounts of it over time to build up an immunity. Without resistance to the poison or an antidote, death is certain to follow within an hour should the poison enter the blood.

More details are sure to follow.

Are there other such settlements found of these dwarves?
