So, a few of you saw me mention in game about a live, zoomable (and potentially 3D) map, that is contained to a plugin. I figured I'd make a post on the site where the idea can be more organized and everyone can see/participate.

The plugin happens to be called Dynmap. It renders a full map of the entire world (probably will take some hours to render this servers' map, who knows), and updates as people build (a small, maybe 2-10 minute delay occurs). As we are in need of a map, perhaps we could use this plugin.

A few good questions were asked concerning it, I shall try to answer those to the best of my ability.

1. Do we need a super computer to run this?
> I'm going to say no. I used to run this plugin on a 1gb server.

2. Can it render a map as big as ours?
> Possibly. I couldn't find anything concerning a render limit.

3. Can we see an example?
> This is a server I occasionally play on, here is their live map:

I shall give you two links, where support is mainly handled, and another link for downloading and tech specifications and what not.

I think a map is a fantastic idea. I really liked the ones that the Regent used to put together for us. I personally liked his a bit more than this one, but if this one is easy to put together and doesn't take much effort to run, I'm all for it.

Yeah. If I recall correctly, Regent's map had a political overlay. This won't though.

Regent's map wasn't live and had overlays for biomes and political entities; I liked his a bit more than this one because of the lore aspect - things didn't update in real(ish) time, leaving our cartographers to do the work every mercannum or so. That being said, I'm with Arjen in that if this is easier and doable, I'm for it.

Dynmap is great. Yes. HOWEVER one HUGE drawback is its impact on the server, on your gig server no biggie because I'd assume the server was small in the first place. However our world is fucking huge. I'm all for it but we need to be careful and test it out.

So, I just had a thought: I'm not sure if us being able to see the locations on players in real time is at all a good idea, for example in wars. Is there a setting to disable player tracking so we can't see it?

Precisely. The bit about the 1gb server was saying that it didn't require a massive computer to run, but yes, I do see what you are saying. I don't know how well it would operate on such a massive scale so testing would have to be done.
