It appears that many would like to finally elect an emperor, however, we need to discuss the purpose of said position and the rules for voting.

Here are my initial ideas after discussion with various people over the past few weeks:

Code:
Regarding Election of an Emperor

1. The position of an Emperor of the Mercurian Empire is to be an elected position, served for either until death  or a term.

(Death makes more sense lore wise but it may have implications some may not care for.)

2. The position of Emperor is ceremonial, meaning they have no extra powers over other nobles  The Emperor would officiate over the Imperial Games and other ceremonial events.

3. The position of Emperor has a limited eligibility, thus, it is only available to Kings (some people would like Dukes to be included, we must discuss this.).

4. The position of Emperor is an elected position, and thus follows other typical voting rules: 60% of the Council of the Crowned, or 50% plus the passing of a Ducal Bill by the House of Dukes.

Feel free to chime in, discuss this, hash it out etc.

I think the outline of the roles laid out above makes sense. One thing that could be improved on is the election process. Instead of using the same process for passing a bill, maybe hold an election that is open to nobles? Just my two cents.

I'd be in favor of that.

I don't think having dukes become the emperor makes sense, also in the past the emperor was never from any nation so are we still cool with having characters stay as the king in their lands and the emperor or should they have to step down (obviously lore off they are still the king) and have someone replace them? Like a prince or however it works for each Kingdom?

Our closest analog did it often.

I agree with Gimpy's point about the dukes. Traditionally, only the Kings have been considered eligible for the position.

As to his question about stepping down, I think we should just have them continue to be the King of their lands for simplicity's sake.

Traditionally, there was nothing even written down and there has never been an elected Emperor.

Letting only the Kings do it is a bit boring, and means that every 2-3 years you'll end up cycling through the same few people.

My only comment is to not define the Emperor as cemonial, as it's role is already defined in the Indoles Carta as such, so we shouldn't over lap and contradict terms. The problem is the actual text of the Carta is hiding in the library backup files.

Fyi, the Indoles Carta currently in operation is a memory-based facsimile of the official one, missing core details that were originally fleshed out.

So, with all due clarification, yes, the traditions have legal basis and have been written down, but no harm to the newcomers who never seen the Indoles Carta in its proper form.
