The Frozen Gods

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Introduction

Belief in the Frozen Gods or the Kaldgudr as they're known in Hrynjandi, has been prevalent among the Tribes since at least the first Era of the Cycle of the Owl. According to Hrynjandi tradition, worship of the Frozen Gods began in full during the migration led by the near-mythical Stormsword from the doomed Þingr lands. Commonly held to be the first Skyspeaker, the Stormsword likely had a key part in forging the traditions of the Hrynjandi.

Today it is the dominant religious belief in the Apocryphaen Wastes (also known as Thrunur). Edging out competitors with harsh religious laws and cultural stigma, the few who hold differing beliefs do so in secret.

The Gods
-~~~~-

-Sodrungr-
The Black God / Old God / Frostfingers

Sometimes considered to be the primary god of the Hrynjandi pantheon, Sodrungr is one half of the duo that make up the Frozen Gods. His domain encompasses that of death, magic, fate and the afterlife. In the inhospitable lands of the Apocryphaen Wastes where life is short and brutal, respect for your own mortality is a virtue often affiliated with followers of Sodrungr.

Said to be the first out of the void and last to meddle in mortal affairs, Sodrungr weaves the web of fate from the shadows. While at first glance it may seem tempting to openly worship a god with such seemingly widespread influence yet according to Hrynjandi tradition all such displays are ignored.

Of the three ruling Skyspeakers, the Skyspeaker of Hrunbor is traditionally associated with Sodrungr.

-Velsr-
The White God / Dawn

The secondary god of the Hrynjandi pantheon, Velsr is the second half of the duo that makes up the Frozen Gods. His domain is the material realm. Worship of Velsr is almost universal among the Hrynjandi people and every family maintains a shrine dedicated to him. Although his influence on the grand scheme of things is generally less than that of Sodrungr in Hrynjandi lore, Velsr is said to play a larger part in day to day activities.

As is recorded in the age-old texts from the period of the Fleeing, Velsr supposedly played a part in ensuring the survival of the refugee Þingr on their voyage to the Apocryphaen Wastes. During their most dire hour, Velsr appeared to the individual later known as the Stormsword and afforded him his titular weapon and blessing. This event is said to have further divided the convoy, leaving only those loyal to the Stormsword and ensuring their survival.

The Skyspeaker traditionally associated with Velsr is the Skyspeaker of Skar.

Creation Myth
The following is a shortened and simplified version of the Hrynjandi creation myth.

When the world was devoid of light and love, there existed an eternal and unending Void. For an aeon and two the Void lay silent and still, awaiting the coming awakening. At the passing of an age, the first out of the void, Sodrungr, laid his vast senses upon the virgin Void.

Out of this union of observation and hollow null came the first of the three worlds. Lokhem. The Black God observed and saw the first beings, unbound by time and space, follow their strange routines without purpose.

Thus Sodrungr averted his gaze until it landed upon a stray ember out of time. He watched as a new realm grew around it to fill an infinite space and he called it Undhem. So it transpired that the rule of Time slowly came back to Undhem and curious creatures and structures began populating the inhospitable landscape. Deciding not to interfere, Sodrungr retreated into the Void.

Another aeon passed in the Void and the two worlds when the coming of the Second came to pass. Born of the same Void as Sodrungr, Velsr flowed into the infinite darkness without direction. Radiating his thoughts and divine essence into his surroundings, the third world was born. Yfhem, the realm inhabited by our ancestors and inherited by ourselves.

At first it was lifeless, a plane without order or change. So it came to the attention of the Black God, who returned to investigate what had transpired. Upon touching Yfhem with his essence, the world came to know order and the elements.

Notice: There is much debate as to whether or not the next paragraph is correct, the presented version is accepted by most Hrynjandi.

Thus it is told that Velsr saw the great change and clashed with the interloper. From the mixing of their essences came the first life, closer to god than man. From these prime beings is all life derived, subdivisions of the divine essence continually diluted by the passing of time.

A fascinating look at your people's beliefs. You've got a significant amount of well documented information here. I would like to see what monuments (if any) there are dedicated to your Pantheon.

While it is true that our beliefs are closely linked to Hrynjandi history, its a common misconception that our people are one and the same. As will be detailed in the upcoming overview, the Dakdakrok originated in the ancestral Hrynjandi homeland but is now composed of a mix of all races and cultures.

Because of our close connection to the Hrynjandi, we have maintained a fairly comprehensive library of knowledge regarding them and their history. More will hopefully be released in due time!
