Maessian philosophy
The light-heartedness and laid back lifestyle that is so characteristic for the greater Maes area is a direct consequence of classic (as classic a 50 year old philosophy can be) Maessian Philosophy. As a relatively late theory, Maessian Philosophy emerged in eastern Wysteria in the early 6th century.

Fishermen and farmers of Maes have always been jovial and positive. It is no surprise they frequently gather together and ponder over life’s complexities and conundrums in a playful and merry way. There are no hard feelings in these gatherings. With lively discussions and many hearty laughs they think and talk til twilight. (Well, not twilight. Sunup. I just wanted another T-word there.)

One one such pleasant occasion the locals decided to do some organized writing. The mailman of Maes gladly accepted his role as secretary. The meeting commenced. An especially talkative gentleman, name redacted, took it as his duty to lead tonight’s session. The good fellows on this particular night agreed to establish a few guidelines. This set of guidelines should represent the mind of the ideal Maessian.

The conversation continued through the night, all the way until the next day’s sunset. The village elders were happy. The richer landowners were happy. The rest were happy. The Maessians had a conclusion. The mailman’s muse had been singing. Loud.

Throughout this meeting almost every single book in Maes had been read. Thirsty for inspiration and information the Maessians slurped every single letter. Influenced by old mystics, paratheology, paraphors, metahumour, and idealistic motives the villages came up with the following ideas and answers:

Does gods and/or ghosts exist?
If gods or ghosts exist, we cannot notice them, therefore it is an irrelevant question.

How did the world get created?
As we have no influence on whether it exists or not it is an irrelevant question. It is at it is. The world is. That’s all that matters. Even if the world doesn’t exist, it doesn’t matter because it de facto exists.

Holidays and celebration
There are holidays. Those should be used to either improve or enjoy life. As there is a direct positive effect from holidays (at least as we perceive it) we should have them as often as possible. About 20% of the villages voted for half-year holidays. That suggestion was dismissed when about 80% of the villagers voted for a year-round holiday.

What is death and how do we deal with it?
For practical reasons our dead should be buried. A celebrative wake should be held in honour of the deceased. Grieving is uncommon but not implausible. Support should be given to those who are sad.
We don’t know what happens after death, therefore preparing or otherwise think about death is irrelevant and counterproductive.

How should we treat animals and other living creatures?
We should treat everything, sentient or not, with respect. We don’t know what animals think, but we might as well have them as pets if it makes us and them seemingly happy.

Do’s and don’t’s (also known as sins and virtues)
An important concept in Maessian Philosophy is the term “hoop”. The definition is vague on purpose to prevent misguided literalness. Hoop can be defined as a “calm, laid back person/thing” The ultimate goal in life is to reach hoopyness, a state of mind where there is nothing that can bring you down. Worrying, stressing and anxiousness have no positives and should be avoided at all costs. Hoopyness can be reached in any way, but by definition there is no way to be evil at the same time as being hoopy.

This text will get expanded as more ideas develop.

I wish that we all attained the state of mind granted by hoopyness. That would be bliss.

I love this! Such a simple yet powerful philosopy. Perhaps the maessians would be eager to discuss their philosophy with other mystics and scholars around the empire.
